Design

The Messerschmitt Me 410 was based on the failed Me 210.1,2

A number of changes were made to make the Me 410 a useful combat aircraft.2 The fuselage was made deeper and longer.2 The wings had automatic wing slots, new outer wing panels, and changed ailerons and flaps.2

Armament

The fuselage had remote controlled barbettes in the fuselage sides.2

Prototype

The Me 410 prototype first flew at the end of 1942.1,2

Production

In January 1943 deliveries of the Me 410A-1 bomber and Me 410A-2 Zerstörer started.2

Production of the Me 410B started in April 1944.2

Production ended in September 1944.2

  • Me 410A-1: Light bomber.1 Had two 20 mm guns in the nose and two 7.92 mm MGs in barbettes on the sides of the fuselage.1 It could carry two 2,205 lb / 1,000 kg bombs.1 Used against the British Isles starting in 1943.1

  • Me 410A-1/U2: Fighter bomber.2 Heavier armament.2 Had gun pack in the ventral weapons bay.2
  • Me 410A-1/U4: Bomber destroyer.1,2 Had a 50 mm gun under the fuselage.1,2 It carried 21 rounds.1

  • Me 410A-3: Long range reconnaissance.2 Additional fuel in weapons bay.2
  • Me 410B: Had two Daimler-Benz DB 603G engines (1,900 HP).1

Usage

The Me 410s were used of Britain as night fighters and bombers.2

Off the coast of France the Me 410s were used as anti-shipping bombers.2

To battle the American bombers, the Me 410s were pressed into anti-bomber service but suffered heavy casualties at the hands of the American fighters.2

From the middle of 1944 most of the Me 410s were converted to Me 410A-1/U2s and Me 410B-1/U2s to be used on Zerstörer missions.2
