Design
Kawasaki had a license to build Lockheed 14s and based the design of the Ki-56 on it.1 The Ki-56 had a longer fuselage and the support structure in the wing was different.1
The construction of the Ki-56 was all metal.1
Prototype
Two Ki-56 prototypes appeared in November 1940.1
